Notes from the Nursery Line
14 March — Day 1
Arrived filthy. Two flights, a truck, then a boat with a temperamental outboard. The station is four buildings and a generator shed on a spit of sand, and the whole place smells of diesel and drying neoprene. Everyone is sunburnt in the same places.
Kiri, who runs the nursery, gave me the orientation in about ninety seconds. "Don't touch the tables. Don't kick the tables. If you feel yourself about to touch a table, hold your hands behind your back and reverse."
Fair enough.
15 March
First dive on the nursery. I'd seen the photographs and I still wasn't ready.
Picture an underwater orchard — because that's genuinely what it is. Rows of frames anchored to sand at about eight metres, each strung with monofilament line, and hanging off every line, spaced like beads, fragments of staghorn coral. Hundreds of them per frame. Thousands across the site. They sway. The whole field sways together in the surge, and the light comes down through the water in moving bands, and you hover there feeling slightly foolish about how much it affects you.
The principle is almost embarrassingly simple. Corals are colonial animals, and most of them reproduce asexually as well as sexually — break a branch off, secure it somewhere, and it carries on growing as an independent colony. Genetically identical to the parent. So you take a small fragment, hang it up where there's good flow and no predators, and let it get on with it. Staghorn can put on ten to fifteen centimetres a year in decent conditions. After twelve to eighteen months you cut it into new fragments, hang half back on the line and take half out to the reef.
One colony becomes twenty. Twenty become four hundred.
17 March
Spent the morning with a toothbrush, cleaning algae off frames. Glamorous.
Asked Kiri the obvious sceptic's question over lunch: does this actually matter, at the scale of an actual reef? She didn't get defensive, which I liked.
"No," she said. "Not by itself. We plant maybe fifteen thousand corals a year here. The reef system is hundreds of square kilometres. If you're imagining we're rebuilding it, we're not — we're nowhere close. Anyone who tells you otherwise is fundraising."
So what's it for?
"Three things. We're keeping genotypes alive that would otherwise be gone. We're learning which ones survive heat, and that information is the actual product. And we're holding specific sites together long enough for something upstream to change. It's a bridge, not a destination. Bridges are still worth building."
21 March
Bleaching explained properly, finally, by someone who wasn't in a hurry.
A coral is two organisms. The animal — the polyp — builds the limestone skeleton and catches the occasional plankton. Living inside its tissue are microscopic algae, zooxanthellae, which photosynthesise and hand over the overwhelming majority of the coral's energy. Something like ninety per cent. It's a lease arrangement: shelter and nutrients in exchange for sugar.
When the water gets too warm for too long, the partnership breaks. The algae start producing compounds that are toxic to the host under stress, and the polyp expels them. That's the bleaching — the coral isn't dying and it isn't bleached in the sense of losing pigment of its own. It was never pigmented. The colour was the tenants. What you're looking at through a white reef is coral skeleton visible through transparent tissue.
If conditions normalise within a few weeks, they can be recolonised. Recover. If not, they starve.
The metric everyone lives by here is degree heating weeks — accumulated thermal stress above the local summer maximum. Four is trouble. Eight is a mass mortality event. We're sitting at 2.1 and it's only March.
26 March
Bad news day. Two frames on the eastern line have lost most of their fragments to disease — tissue just sloughing off, a white band moving up the branch a few millimetres a day. Kiri cut out the affected sections with shears and surfaced looking grey.
She's been doing this eleven years. I asked, carefully, how she manages the grief of it, and she said something I've been turning over since: "You grieve for a week and then you get back in. The alternative is that the only people left working on it are the ones who don't care much, and that's a worse outcome."
2 April
Better week. Outplanting.
You take fragments from the nursery, swim them out in crates, and cement them onto cleaned patches of dead reef with epoxy. It's fiddly. Your hands cramp. The epoxy sets faster than you want it to. Ninety corals in two hours and I was wrecked.
They're not planting randomly, which I hadn't understood. Every outplant is a specific genotype, tagged and logged, and they deliberately mix — putting genotypes that survived the 2023 heat next to ones that didn't, in the same patch, so that when they spawn they'll cross. Assisted gene flow, it's called. You're not just replacing corals. You're trying to shift the genetic composition of the population towards heat tolerance, faster than it would shift on its own.
Whether that's fast enough is, as Kiri puts it, "the entire question, and nobody knows."
6 April
Last dive. Went back to the first frame I ever cleaned, five weeks ago. Measurably bigger. Genuinely, visibly bigger, in five weeks.
I've been trying to work out why this place doesn't feel despairing, given the numbers, and I think I've got it. Nobody here is pretending. They'll tell you flatly that restoration without reducing thermal stress is palliative care. They know the scale mismatch. They know how it probably goes.
And then they get in the water at seven in the morning with a toothbrush.
There's a word Kiri used on my second day that I didn't note down properly at the time. She was talking about the fragments — how you cut a coral and it doesn't die, it multiplies, how injury is the mechanism of propagation. "It's the most hopeful biology I know," she said. "You break it and you get more of it."
Boat at six tomorrow. Sunburnt in the same places as everyone else now.
